A. Background

The South Pacific Stock Exchange (SPSE) has this year decided to involve the high school students into its awareness programme and with assistance from the Ministry of Education, Heritage & Arts, SPSE has this year launched a new financial literacy initiative – the 2018 National Essay Competition.

B. Who can Participate
  • All secondary school students in Fiji can participate.
  • Those in Year 9 and 10 will qualify under Category 1 and those students in Year 11, 12 and 13 will qualify under  Category 2.
  • Three different topics are assigned under each Category and participating students should only attempt one topic under their relevant Category.
C. What does a Student need to do next?
  • Obtain a copy of the Application Form* today which clearly states the terms and conditions of entry amongst other important details.

    * The Application Form must be signed by the parent/guardian of the student giving him/her permission to participate and the form must be endorsed by the head of the School. Students need to submit accurate and complete information in the Application Form and attach to the essay write-up clearly marking the relevant sections.

D. Focus areas of Assessment

All the essays submitted to SPSE will be assessed based on the following particulars:

  • Relevance/Understanding of the Topic - how best has the question been understood and attempted and the inclusion of definitions of key terms (where applicable);
  • Evidence – demonstration of use of appropriate sources of information during research and the use of illustrations, calculations and examples (where applicable);
  • Organisation/Content - inclusion of effective Introduction, appropriately addressed subject matter and comprehensive and effective answer to the question as well as appropriate conclusion with summary of key points;
  • Style and Referencing - use of accurate spelling, clear sentence construction, punctuation and clear referencing and adherence to the use of number of words and other instructions; and
  • Creativity/Effective Communication - evidence of use of innovative illustrations and original thinking (where applicable).
E. How to submit Essay?
  • All essay write-ups must be in English and only one essay write-up per student is allowed.
  • The number of words is restricted to a maximum of 1,500 words and students may use any recognized style of referencing system and this must be consistently used throughout the Essay.
  • Application Form together with the essay can be submitted to the SPSE by one of the following modes:

    > Hand Deliver your essay to us at: 33 Ellery Street, FNPF Boulevard, Suva


    The final decision of selecting the winner under each category vests with the SPSE. By submitting the essay, participating students allow SPSE to use the content of their essay and/or pictures, as appropriate for any promotional purposes.
